Say Wow to 1K Virgin Flowerless Girls in Ngarot at Indramayu Tjimanoek Feast
A thousand girls participated in Ngarot
Tradition on October 6th, 2016. This tradition held in Tjimanoek Feast in
Indramayu city. Indramayu is a regency of West Java Province, Indonesia.
The term of ngarot comes from Sudanese.
Ngarot derived from Nga-rot “ngaleueut.”
The meaning ngarot is drinking. This centuries-old tradition celebrates to
welcomes rainy season.
Before the rainy season comes, the rice
farmer will begin planting the rice. It usually occurs in the third week of
November or December. Wednesday will be the sacred day to start planting the
rice.

Only the virgin girl and youth single man
are eligible to participate in this cultural tradition. This is the symbol of
purity. The girls will dress with kebaya, traditional semi-transparent blouse-dress.
Their head will decorate with crowned flowers. The myth said if the flower is
going to wilt, then the girl is believe that she is not virgin anymore.
A thousand teens girls walked for 3 kilometres in
the day of Tjimanoek Feast. These youth girls come from Lelea Village, where the
Ngarot tradition origin since 16 centuries ago.

During Tjimanoek carnival, the participant
brings an Indramayu mango. About 3 tons sweet famous gedong gincu mango from
local area presented in this feast. The mango carried by the boy who the
participants of this feast too.

Tjimanoek carnival will propose as an
annual feast. This festival is also to celebrate the anniversary of 489th
Indramayu Regency.
